Paul Poiret as a perfumer

It is said that Poiret was involved in the formulation of fragrances, trying and correcting the formulas prepared by the perfumer. Some photos, conceived more as an advertising material, tried to persuade the public that the fashion designer participated in all stages of fragrance creation. The myth was born (and it still exists nowadays) - the designer who chooses and creates himself the fragrances as an absolute master of his empire. Fragrance creation might seem easy for an outsider but a good fragrance needs time, experience, know-how and artistic sense - simple words that are crucial to achieve a well balanced and original perfume.

How interesting! Thanks for this post.
So, it has been a myth for a long time, right?
Of course there is a different degree of involvement depending on the fashion designer, but still fashion designers are total amateurs in perfumery. From what I hear, even Giorgio Armani who is very much involved in each development of his fragrance doesn't know how to smell the mods properly. He would spray 10 mods on one arm!

Definitely an interesting post! Thanks for that.

I suppose I didn't really believe that myth, but the myth is indeed still there. The reason why I didn't believe it is because I knew that Britney Spears or Paris Hilton couldn't possibly have been there coming up with these fragrances. Obviously this was someone else's artistic talent.

I'm not insulting either of them, just saying that to be a master at making fragrances you need to be that exactly – a master. One doesn't learn over night, and both of them have clearly not studied (and I don't mean in a purely academic sense) this artistry. Obviously someone was helping them.

There's obviously a lot more that goes into this that most of us know, and I find it quite fascinating to be honest! Thanks for the post, loved the pictures as well...

Is this the same Paul Poiret who created the brassiere? If so, I wonder why there is no mention of his fragrances on Wikipedia. Maybe you should go and update the entry on Wikipedia...

I enjoyed his quote about his hobble skirt, “It was in the name of Liberty that I proclaimed the fall of the corset and the adoption of the brassiere which, since then, has won the day. Yes, I freed the bust, but I shackled the legs.”

Very interesting I must say. He seemed to be a very busy man.

Are there any popular or recent brands of perfumes that originated from the works of Mr. Poiret? What were his sources of essential oils for the perfumes he made?
