Museum of Art and Design New York
Ralf Schwieger becomes the Dept of Olfactory Art's first Artist in Residence.
Ralf Schwieger was born in Germany. He studied chemistry, moved to Berlin to specialize in fragrance chemistry before joining a perfumery school in Grasse. He likes to think of perfumery as something almost primary, requiring a highly developed sense of esthetics, yet always playful! Schwieger draws inspiration from the dynamic triangle between art, science and industry, the graceful colors, textures and delicacy of fabulous insects, the art of cooking, with a weakness for patisserie, contemporary dance (particularly Pina Bausch), nature in its impressive force as simple as rain as well as the gentleness and vulnerability of animals, perfumery raw materials of natural and synthetic origin, ready to be combined in unforeseen proportions, making jewelery and Japanese culture, exemplified in packaging design.
Schwieger's body of work includes: Thierry Mugler Womanity, Hermès Eau des Merveilles, Marc Jacobs Marc Jacobs Men, Yves Saint Laurent Baby Doll, Naomi Campbell Naomi Campbell, David Yurman Summer Essence, and Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle Lipstick Rose.
OPEN STUDIOS
Start your visit in the Open Studios to talk with artists about their processes, materials and concepts. The Open Studios is an educational space that fosters dialog between artists, designers, and the public. Every day, the Open Studios hosts artists and designers as the produce their work in a public environment. The Open Studios supports the development of original works through special projects and residencies.
During Ralf’s residence he will publicly create a work of olfactory art in the 6th Floor’s beautiful glass-walled Artist Studios. Every raw material synthetic and natural is there for the Museum’s visitors to smell, as well as every mod. Visitors are interacting freely with Ralf, asking him questions and smelling his work.
Chandler Burr acts as creative director and he'd commissioned him to work on an idea of ginger and another idea of spearmint.
Each week, Ralf is taking the most promising mod, printing it out, and putting its complete formula on the wall so that visitors are able to watch the work as it evolves. Visitors will be helped by a visual guide on "How To Read a Formula".
Ralf Schwieger is in residence every Thursday.
